What to Expect at an athletics Club
Most athletics clubs will start to welcome children from the age of 6 or 7. It’s important to note that athletics clubs will introduce children to a variety of activities, not just running. Athletics – also known as track and field – includes running, jumping (long jump and high jump), as well as throwing sports. As your child is introduced to athletics, they will often get to try all these different sports.
Sessions will typically last an hour and take place either on the weekends or after school. In the beginning, they will feature a variety of drills and games that will help your child develop their technique and movement.
You won’t need to take too much to early athletics training sessions. It’s worth checking with the coach or club beforehand, but as a general rule you will need:
🏃♀️ Sneakers / Trainers. It’s important to make sure your child has comfortable running shoes. It is unlikely you will need track spikes in these early lessons.
🏃♀️ Sports clothes. Unless otherwise specified, a t-shirt and shorts are fine.
🏃♀️ Drink/Snack. Your child is going to be running… a lot. Make sure they have something to drink and a snack for when the session ends.
