What’s more, you do not need to spend a lot of money to introduce your child to karate, but they should go to lessons if they are serious about learning the sport.
Before we look for classes near you, let’s learn more about the sport and explore some of the skills and drills you can practice at home.
how to Practice karate
Because karate is a combat sport, most children will complete the bulk of their learning in structured classes at a local dojo (club) or community center. In these classes, they will learn skills and techniques that provide the foundation for the sport. These include:
🥋 Punches (Tsuki): Tsuki means thrusts, but in karate it is a common term for punching, which is practised using proper form and alignment.
🥋 Kicks (Geri): Kicks increase in difficulty, but your child will learn beginner-friendly kicks like the front kick (mae geri) and roundhouse kick (mawashi geri).
🥋 Blocks (Uke): These are defensive moves to stop or deflect an attack. In the beginning, your child might learn the upper block (age uke) and downward block (gedan barai).
🥋 Stances (Dachi): These are basic foot positions that help your child to stay balanced and grounded.
Your child does not need to go to a class to practice these skills. There are beginner drills for kids that can be practiced at home. However, if they want to pursue the sport properly, they should enrol in a class.
What is Karate
Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that focuses on striking techniques such as punches, kicks, and blocks. As a sport, it emphasizes respect, discipline, and personal development, making it a popular martial art for children around the world.
These days, karate classes often take place in community centers and halls. However, traditional classes take place in a dojo, which means ‘place of the way’. Students (karateka) are trained by an instructor (sensei) in all aspects of karate, including physical and personal growth, self-discipline, and respect.
While dojos vary widely in size and formality, the values of respect, discipline, and focus are constant across all karate environments.
Once a newcomer to the sport has learned the basics, they can be awarded a white belt. This marks the beginning of their progression in the sport. As they train and practice, they are tested by their sensei. If they pass the test, they can progress to the next level and earn a different coloured belt. Karate belts are arranged in the order of: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, red, brown, and black. If your child makes it to black belt, there are ten further levels before reaching Ju-Dan – the highest rank.
