Introduce Your Child to Gymnastics
The How, What, and Why of Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a dynamic and engaging sport that combines physical strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Practiced by girls and boys around the world, the two most common forms are artistic (think balance beams, bars, and rings) and rhythmic (think performances set to music, involving apparatus such as hoops and balls). Here, we cover the foundational skills that will help your child prepare for either variation.
how to do gymnastics
You have probably seen gymnastics at the Olympics. As you can imagine, it requires a significant amount of training and dedication to reach that level. However, to reach that level, those athletes had to start with the basics. And the basics of gymnastics are moves that kids practice at home and in the garden all the time.
Getting your child ready for their first lesson can be as simple as teaching them how to:
🤸♀️ Somersault/Forward Roll.
🤸♀️ Cartwheel.
🤸♀️ Handstand.
🤸♀️ Bridge.
If you’re unsure how to teach those concepts, don’t worry: we’ve got you covered.
What is Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a sport composed of several disciplines, but the most well-known are artistic and rhythmic.
Artistic is structured around various events or apparatuses, which change depending on whether it’s women’s or men’s gymnastics. For example, women typically compete on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise, while men participate in six events: floor exercise, rings, vault, pommel horse, high bar, and parallel bars. Each apparatus emphasizes different skill sets—from tumbling and acrobatics to strength holds and aerial maneuvers.
Rhythmic is a graceful and expressive discipline within gymnastics that combines elements of ballet, dance, and acrobatics. Competitors use handheld apparatuses such as ribbons, hoops, and balls, performing choreographed routines to music. At a competitive level, it is primarily a female sport, although some countries hold competitions for male rhythmic gymnasts.
In both recreational and competitive settings, gymnasts are taught progressive skills that build upon one another, ensuring that they master basic movements before attempting more advanced techniques.
Training is often broken down into routines and drills, which are repeated regularly to develop muscle memory and improve performance. Coaches emphasize correct form and technique to prevent injury and maximize skill development. Young children usually start with floor-based activities such as rolls, cartwheels, and simple jumps, gradually moving on to more structured skills as they gain strength and coordination. The learning process is incremental and guided by certified coaches in a safe, purpose-built facility.

Fun Facts about Gymnastics:
🤸♀️ The term gymnastics comes from the ancient Greek word ‘gymnos’, which means ‘naked’, as athletes in ancient Greece originally practiced and competed without clothing.
🤸♀️ Gymnastics is one of the few sports where athletes often peak at a young age—many elite gymnasts start training as early as age 4 and can reach world-class levels in their teens.
🤸♀️ Artistic gymnastics has been part of the modern Olympic Games since they began in 1896, making it one of the original Olympic sports—and rhythmic gymnastics was added in 1984, giving the sport even more variety on the world stage.
