What to expect at A tennis lesson

Tennis clubs and local park programs offer two types of lessons: Group and Individual. While individual lessons are great (albeit expensive), when you are introducing your child to the sport, group lessons are the ideal place to start. These are fun sessions with other kids.

Children’s group lessons normally take place at tennis clubs on weekend mornings or after school. Most group lessons will last for an hour and will focus on developing tennis skills through games and drills.

Tennis clubs normally provide the basics for a lesson: the court and the balls. Beyond that, you should expect to bring:

🎾 A tennis racquet. Some programs, especially for very young beginners, may have racquets available to borrow.

🎾 Appropriate footwear. While some clubs may eventually ask children to use non-marking tennis shoes, sturdy sports shoes are fine to begin with.

🎾 Appropriate clothing. Most tennis clubs do not have a dress code, but it is worth checking in advance. If it is hot or sunny, make sure your child wears a cap and has sunscreen.

🎾 Something to drink. Tennis players work up a thirst! Make sure the bottle is clearly labeled with their name.

The club will clarify any questions you might have when you book your child for a lesson. Don’t be afraid to ask about class sizes or making sure that they follow the progressive ball system. This will help ensure that your child will have fun when they are introduced to the sport.

How to find your local tennis club

There are tennis courts and tennis clubs in towns and cities around the world. Some are private, but most will offer junior coaching in either group or individual lessons. Always choose group lessons at the beginning; individual lessons can be expensive.
