What to expect at A soccer Training session

There are soccer pitches and programs in parks and towns all over the world. Children’s soccer club training usually takes place on weekend mornings. Most sessions will last for about an hour and involve a mix of drills, skill-based games, and mini matches.

For younger age groups, the focus should be on having fun, learning basic skills, and developing a love for the game. The atmosphere should be positive and encouraging, not overly competitive. Coaches will group children by age to ensure the games and equipment are appropriate for their developmental stage.

When you’re looking for a program for your child, it’s about more than just finding the closest one.

What to Look For in a kids Soccer Program

⚽️ A Focus on Fun: Especially for ages 10 and under, the primary goal should be fun and engagement. Watch a session if you can. Are the kids smiling and actively participating?

⚽️ Qualified and Positive Coaches: Look for coaches who are encouraging, patient, and good communicators. A formal coaching license or certification is a great sign, as is experience working with children.

⚽️ Small-Sided Games: Good youth programs use small-sided games (e.g., 3v3 or 4v4 on small fields with small goals). This ensures every child gets more touches on the ball, is more involved in the game, and has more opportunities to learn.

⚽️ A Clear Philosophy: The club should have a clear, positive philosophy focused on player development and sportsmanship over winning at all costs, especially at the younger ages.

⚽️ Safety as a Priority: The program should enforce the use of shin guards, have access to first-aid supplies, and ideally, have coaches who are background-checked.

What to bring to a first session

Most soccer clubs will provide equipment like balls and bibs required for team play. However, when you sign up for sessions, it is worth checking whether your child will need:

⚽️ Soccer boots with cleats. For playing on grass, soccer cleats/boots are necessary for traction. For artificial turf, turf shoes are better. For the very first session, sturdy athletic shoes might be acceptable, but it is always best to check with the coach beforehand.

⚽️ Shin guards. Some soccer clubs and leagues make shin guards mandatory for all practices and games, even for the youngest beginners. If that is the case, a child without shin guards will likely not be allowed to participate.

⚽️ Any specific clothing. In initial sessions, children are normally fine to wear any sports clothing. As they develop, you may be asked to make sure they wear specific colours or kit.

⚽️ A Water Bottle: Soccer involves a lot of running! Make sure your child has a water bottle, ideally with their name on it.
