Soccer: what Equipment do you need?

What Equipment does your kid need to play Soccer

Soccer is a simple sport when it comes to equipment. You need one thing to play: a ball, also known as a soccer. If you want to invest in a goal for your backyard, there are many options available; however, many people simply use trees or ground markers to mark out a goal.

If your child goes to soccer training or joins a team, you may need to get them shin guards and soccer boots (if they are playing on grass, these will have cleats or studs on the bottom of them), but you don’t need to worry about that yet. Oh, and there’s a good chance that they might have a favourite team – but buying that team’s jumper is optional.

Choosing a Soccer ball

While it is true that anyone can play with any size of ball, it is important to choose the right size soccer for your child. Smaller soccer balls encourage faster skill development (and enjoyment), and are much lighter than full-size soccer balls and so reduce the risk of injuries.

Choosing the right size soccer ball is important for your child's development.

There are five sizes of soccer balls, although Size 1 is normally used for replica / commemorative balls. As a basic guide:

⚽️ Size 2: Perfect for children 5 and under who enjoy the act of kicking a ball.

⚽️ Size 3: Suited for children aged 8 and under. Size 3 balls are easier to control and help a child to build confidence as they learn skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting.

⚽️ Size 4: Aimed at players ages 8-12, the ball is slightly lighter than a full-size soccer ball. This allows children to build strength and coordination while minimizing the risk of injuries.

⚽️ Size 5: For children aged 13+, this is a full-size soccer ball that they can play with for the rest of their lives.

⚽️ Soccer balls can be surprisingly expensive. However, a basic ball is good enough for any child starting in the sport.

plastic or Synthetic balls?

Soccer balls are usually made out of synthetic leather or plastic. Both have their advantages, but it is worth noting that nearly all clubs and teams play with synthetic leather balls.

⚽️ Plastic Balls: These are cheap, light, and durable (if you don’t have spiky plants in your garden). They are perfect for casual games at home or in the local park.

⚽️ Synthetic Leather Balls: More expensive, heavier, but the standard in team and match play. If your child wants to develop as a player, they should learn how to pass, shoot, and dribble with a leather soccer ball. This is the best all-around choice for a child who is starting to take the sport more seriously.

Optional Extras…

When your child joins a club or organized training, there are two pieces of gear that they might be asked to invest in:

⚽️ Shin Guards: Shin guards protect the lower legs from kicks and impact. Many leagues will not allow a child to practice or play in a game without them. Look for a pair that has a hard outer shell and soft padding inside. Some models have attached ankle guards for extra protection, which is a great feature for younger players. They should fit snugly and cover most of the area between the ankle and the knee.

⚽️ Soccer Cleats / Boots: If your child is playing on a grass field, they will need cleats. The studs on the bottom provide the traction needed to run, turn, and stop without slipping.
