If your child wants to join a team, they will join either a Tee Ball team or a Little League Team, depending on their age. Below is a basic guide to the set-up of youth baseball in North America. You can find more information on this at littleleague.org.
Tee Ball is a non-competitive form of baseball for children aged 4-6. During the sessions, which typically last between 45 minutes and an hour, children are introduced to various baseball skills. So that they can focus on technique, they hit the ball off a tee.
From ages 5-6, children who have played a season of Tee Ball can enter the Minor League Division. While they may start to play practice games with scores, they are not yet involved in official Little League match-ups. Rather, the focus is on building skills. Pitching is slow, and children are taught positioning and technique.
From the age of 7-12, children start playing competitively against one another if selected for a Minor League Division team. Games are scored and players start to play by the rules of baseball.
From 9-12 players are able to play official Little League games. There are local leagues and tournaments, all following the official rules of baseball. Little League baseball is exceptionally competitive, with the World Series televised across the USA.
From the age of 11+, players can start to graduate to the Intermediate Division (11-13) and then the Junior League Division (12-14). Finally, players aged from 13-16 are eligible for the Senior League Division teams.
